Joseph Lawrence Landis, 83, died on May 11, 2018, surrounded by family, at his home in Indianapolis, IN. He was born on September 18, 1934 in Sheridan, IN to the late Sherman and Helen (Smith) Landis. He was a faithful member of Sheridan Friends and later a member of St. Luke’s UMC in Kokomo, IN. His interest included being with his family, working in the yard and flower beds, refinishing furniture, and traveling.
He attended Sheridan, IN school, Butler University earning a BS degree in education in 1956, and MA degree in history and political science in 1963. Many post graduate hours of post graduate work at Butler University, IU Kokomo, and Ball State University. He was a high school teacher for 40 years, teaching in Lizton, IN, Sheridan, IN, and two schools in Kokomo, IN, retiring in 1996.
Joseph married Sharon L. Jessup on November 28, 1959 in Sheridan, Indiana. Survivors include daughter, Caroline C. (Douglas) Johnson of Indianapolis, IN, and son Gregory C. (Elizabeth) Landis of Moscow, ID, sister, Phyllis J. Gary and brother, David S. Landis. Grandchildren are Derrick (Melissa) Johnson, Erica (Blake) Hanson, Caroline E. Landis, George Landis, Laurabeth Landis, Isabelle Landis, and Jackson Landis, and 3 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Mary Jane Wright.
A memorial service will be at 3pm on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 700 E. Southway Blvd, Kokomo, IN 46902. Visitation before the service and light refreshments afterwards. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Kokomo Urban Outreach, 1706 Home Ave. Kokomo, IN 46902.
